Carlo Basile Announcement Speech
July 18, 2007

Thank you Dave. I am so honored to have your support and your friendship. I want to thank all of you for being here tonight to join with me as I begin my race for State Representative. I it is truly overwhelming and humbling to see this outpouring of support and I wont soon forget all who stood with me from the beginning.

I would like to take a moment to introduce my family who are here with me tonight. My wife Crystal and my son Carlo – you are my world and I thank God everyday for your love and companionship. My mother, who raised my brothers and myself after my dad passed when I was 7 – thank you. You have instilled in me your amazing work ethic and devotion to family. And to my brothers, thank you for all of your help and support.

Family is so important to me. I am the son of immigrants who came to this country to seek the American dream of work, home ownership and success. When my father died when I was young my mother took it upon herself to raise our family as the mother and the father. She taught me by example that with hard work and dedication to family and community you can accomplish anything.

I have a lifetime of experience and a lifetime of service in this community. I played youth sports here in East Boston and have always been involved in the community. I graduated from Dom Savio and attended Suffolk University. My wife and I have bought a house here, we are raising our son here – We are committed to this community. Simply put I want make East Boston the best place it can be to live, work and raise a family – that’s it.

I have been delivering for the people of this community for years. I know that people don’t want to hear about legislation and parliamentary procedures – they want know that they can pick up the phone and get their Rep. on the phone – that will be me, because it has been me.

Everyone in this room here tonight knows that I have done my best to help people. I learned from people like Tony Canata that to give back is to live here. We all have had our breaks in life and we all need to do what we can to help. That is the basis for everything I do and will be the driving force behind my office as your next State Rep.

Whether it was my time as the Chief of Staff at the Registry of Motor Vehicles or the work I have done with the Selesian’s Boys club or my volunteer time with the Sacred Heart Church, I have tried to make a difference in people’s lives.

As I have said before, State Rep. is the closest form of Government to the people. It has to be responsive to them. As your State Rep. you can be assured that my phone will always be on and my door will always be open – as it always has been.

We in this community have been blessed with the Representation we have had both in the House and the Senate. I want to continue the tradition of excellence shown by the examples of Anthony Petruccelli and President Travaglini throughout the years – and as your next State Rep. I will!

I will continue to be diligent about issues that matter to all of you. Issues like the constant parking problems we experience here in East Boston. Issues like the ever present Massport and all of the concerns that come along with it. And issues like the upkeep of our beaches and parks.

And, as we have seen recently, we may have another fight on our hands with officials who want to put another enormous burden on us with a quote un-quote world class casino in our town. I will stand up to those who want to congest our streets more and thrust more upon us so that the state and city can reap more money and more taxes at our expense. Enough is enough – we have paid our fair share to the Commonwealth with three tunnels, an airport and a horse track within our borders. How much more can we take?

All of these issues are quality of life issues that can eat away at a community and deteriorate the very fabric of our society. I will fight for you – for us to ensure that our voice is heard loud and clear on Beacon Hill!

I know that constituent service is the key to this job but there are times where you must exhibit leadership as well. I also know that experience alone is not enough to be a true leader. Leadership means taking stances on issues that may or may not be the most popular or get you the most votes. It means standing up for your principles and what you feel is right and then dealing with the fall out from that later. That is the type of leader I will be.

So, I stand before you all tonight as a son of this district. As a father, a husband, and a homeowner in this community. And officially tonight, I Carlo Basile declare myself to be a candidate for the office of State Representative from East Boston! Thank you all. Good night.
